In these recent years, Caritas International and the Caritas network have been focusing primarily on Haiti. At the beginning of 2010, an earthquake destroyed a large area of the country with devastating consequences of more than 100,000 deaths and no less than one and a half million people left homeless. During the first emergency phase, the Caritas network distributed medical care, water, tents, food rations and blankets. This was followed by reconstruction projects, including the construction of 1600 homes in the Port-au-Prince area and an orphanage that can house 150 children.
Our action in Haiti focuses on sustainable reconstruction.
