A new Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in Ituri Province, in north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ebola is an extremely contagious disease, and the World Health Organization has declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern. Caritas teams on the ground are already taking action. They are distributing protective equipment and hygiene supplies, raising awareness about prevention measures and quickly referring people showing symptoms to appropriate healthcare services.

Additional support is urgently needed to continue these efforts and reach more communities.

Preventing the spread of the virus

The outbreak is affecting a region that has already endured years of conflict. Tens of thousands of people are living in camps where access to safe water, sanitation facilities and healthcare remains limited. In this context, prevention is essential. Providing information, strengthening hygiene measures, supporting healthcare services and rapidly identifying suspected cases all help limit the spread of the virus.

If even a single Ebola case is detected here, the consequences could be devastating. How do you wash your hands when thousands of households share a single water point? How do you isolate someone who is sick when families sleep side by side on the ground?

What Caritas teams are doing

With our support, colleagues on the ground are strengthening prevention activities in displacement camps, villages and towns across the region. They are also raising awareness within communities, including through local radio stations.
