Burundi

Young people are building their future. With you.

In Burundi, young people are moving forward with determination. They cultivate the land, develop activities and seek out solutions. Yet conditions remain challenging: an unpredictable climate, rising costs and uncertain incomes.
With your support, their efforts can take root and grow sustainably.

A reality that often remains out of sight

Not all crises make the headlines. Some continue over time, away from the spotlight. In Burundi, nearly three out of four people live in situations of significant vulnerability. In rural areas, families rely on agriculture to move forward.

Today, they face several challenges:

  • harvests affected by climate disruption
  • rising production costs
  • unstable incomes

For many young people, building a future calls for resilience every day.

Building concrete solutions, with communities

Caritas International works alongside local communities over the long term. Nothing is imposed. Solutions are developed together with young people and their families, based on their realities.
The aim is to strengthen their autonomy and support them in moving forward within their own environment.

Together, concrete initiatives are put in place:

  • training in sustainable agriculture: climate-adapted techniques, agroecology
  • improved crops: quality seeds, resilient plant varieties
  • development of additional sources of income: beekeeping (honey production), small businesses (sewing, baking, etc.)
  • protection of the land: tree planting to reduce erosion

These actions enable young people to generate income and remain in their region.

Francine moves forward, step by step

Francine is a mother of four. She lives from agriculture in her village. When she found herself having to provide for her family on her own, she began looking for solutions.

The harvests were no longer enough. Gradually, life became more difficult.

Francine mother of four children

Today, she grows tomatoes, earns a more stable income and looks to the future with greater peace of mind.

Caritas did more than help us through difficult times. It supported us in moving forward and building a future. Thanks to this support, I am not only a mother working to feed her children. I am a woman who stands strong, able to build, to produce and to look ahead.
