Objective
Through this project, Caritas International and it partners hope to provide safe and child-friendly school environments for students, teachers and school management committees in 34 schools in order to contribute to the sustainable recovery of the education sector in Nepal.
Context
The programme supports communities severely affected by the earthquake on 25 April 2015. Through this project, Caritas International helps in rehabilitating completely destroyed and heavily damaged schools in Sindhupalchok, one of the districts which was severely hit according to the Post Disaster Needs Assessment carried out by the Government of Nepal. Additionally, Caritas Switzerland and HELVETAS closely coordinate with Solidar – a Swiss partner, active in the area of shelter, water, and sanitation & hygiene.
Overall, 34 schools in 6 village development committees are being rehabilitated to provide all students and teachers in the affected communities with safe and child-friendly school environments. These rehabilitated schools will provide earthquake-safe classrooms with appropriate sanitation facilities and safe drinking water supply for all students including students with disabilities.
Furthermore, hygiene promotion and activities that raise awareness of the importance of school attendance is being carried out for all students and teachers of the 34 schools.
Beneficiaries
Through this project, Caritas and its partners are hoping to reach 5985 students in 6 VDCs (village development committees) in Sindhupalchok, ensuring access to safe and child-friendly schools, including appropriate WASH facilities.
