Myanmar (formerly Burma) was hit by a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28, 2025, followed by destructive aftershocks. The epicenter was in the Sagaing region, but tremors were felt as far as neighboring countries like Thailand and Laos. The toll is devastating: thousands have lost their lives, been injured, or left homeless.

A critical humanitarian situation

Local authorities report thousands of missing persons, and the human toll continues to rise. So far, the earthquake has claimed more than 2,719 lives and left 3,408 injured. Over 22,000 families have been affected, with thousands more sleeping outside in fear of aftershocks. In total, 15 million people have been impacted by this disaster. The situation remains critical, with urgent humanitarian aid needed.

A disaster with immense consequences

The material damage is colossal. Mandalay, one of the country’s largest cities, has been severely affected. Tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed, and critical infrastructure—hospitals, schools, and roads—now lies in ruins. Thousands of injured people are being treated in overcrowded hospitals that desperately lack medical supplies.

Survivors, having lost their loved ones, homes, and belongings, are in a dire situation. Access to clean water and food has become extremely difficult, and thousands remain without shelter. Urgent action is needed to alleviate suffering and respond to this humanitarian crisis.
