GENDER BASED VIOLENCE
During conflicts, along displacement routes and even in reception facilities, far too many women face violence, exploitation and abuse.
Together with local partners, Caritas provides immediate assistance and remains by their side over the long term. Your donation helps them regain safety, confidence and independence.
Violence against women intensifies in situations of conflict, forced displacement, natural disasters and extreme poverty. Some women need urgent medical care. Others need a safe place, support to exercise their rights or opportunities to rebuild their livelihoods.
Caritas supports them at every stage of their recovery. Together with our local partners, we provide:
Rebuilding a life takes time. That is why our support continues long after the immediate emergency has passed.

Cynthia 49-year-old Congolese mother
Cynthia* is a 49-year-old Congolese mother. After experiencing sexual violence and contracting HIV in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, she found refuge in a camp in Uganda.
When she arrived, her health was fragile. With no income, she could not afford food, medication, hygiene products or shelter. She felt alone and saw no way forward.
At the camp, Cynthia met Caritas’s local teams. She received essential supplies, medical care and psychological support.
he was also supported in finding her place within the community. But the assistance did not stop there.
Cynthia trained as a seamstress and received a sewing machine. Today, she earns a living and can send her children to school. After completing another training course provided by Caritas, she now supports other women who have experienced violence.
Cynthia’s journey shows what long-term support can make possible: finding safety again, developing your own resources and passing on to others the strength gained along the way.

Caritas International works with local partners in Burkina Faso, Niger, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Uganda and Palestine. Their local presence enables them to identify needs, respond quickly and develop solutions with communities that reflect local realities.
Our work is not limited to addressing the immediate consequences of violence. We also support women in learning about their rights, rebuilding their livelihoods and once again playing an active role in their communities.
We move forward with them, not in their place.

Near Wavre, Caritas International runs a reception facility for women seeking international protection, whether alone or with their children.
Many have experienced violence in their country of origin, during their journey or after arriving in Belgium. In this small-scale facility, they find a safe environment and receive tailored administrative, medical and psychological support.
Training opportunities and childcare for young children also help them gradually prepare to live independently.
Providing a safe place gives women the space they need to care for themselves, protect their children and look towards the future.
After receiving care, women need time to rebuild their confidence. After finding safety, they need opportunities to regain their independence. And after receiving support, some women go on to become a source of strength for others.
