EMERGENCY – VENEZUELA

Earthquakes of 24 June. The needs remain immense

July 2026

On 24 June, Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. More than a month later, there is no longer any chance of finding survivors beneath the rubble, and 10,000 people are still missing. More than a month later, the scale of the disaster is becoming clearer.

A devastating human toll

In just a few seconds, entire neighbourhoods were destroyed. The lives of thousands of people changed forever. To date, the authorities have reported:

+ 5.400

deaths

+ 16.500

people injured

+ 17 000

people left homeless

Behind these figures are thousands of shattered lives. Many families have lost everything. In total, more than 23,000 people are still living in makeshift camps today. This comes at a time when the country was already highly vulnerable and a large proportion of the population already had limited access to healthcare, safe drinking water and sufficient food…

A large-scale relief effort

From the very first hours following the earthquakes, our colleagues at Caritas Venezuela took action.

Thousands of staff members and volunteers distributed relief packages and prepared meals, while also taking the time to listen to the victims and offer them comfort. Thanks in part to your donation to support those affected, the staff and many volunteers of Caritas Venezuela have already been able to:

  • distribute more than 18,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including 8,000 tonnes of water;
  • prepare and distribute almost 14,000 food kits containing maize flour, rice, pasta, beans, canned tuna and sardines, and sugar;
  • prepare and distribute more than 9,000 hygiene kits containing bleach and soap, a bucket with a lid, brooms and brushes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, water purification tablets and sunscreen;
  • distribute almost 100,000 items of medical equipment and medicines.

The needs remain immense

Almost 23,000 families, representing an estimated 92,000 to 115,000 people, have already received assistance. Hospitals and health centers have also been supported. But the needs remain immense. Our colleagues on the ground and the 7,500 volunteers who have been mobilised want to help even more people.

By making another donation today, you will continue to directly support Caritas Venezuela’s emergency response.
