EMERGENCY

Venezuela : Two powerful earthquakes

In just a few seconds, the lives of thousands of people were turned upside down.

On 24 June, northern Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5, just 39 seconds apart. Since then, rescue teams have been working around the clock amid widespread devastation, while humanitarian needs continue to grow by the hour.

Caritas Venezuela’s teams are already standing alongside the affected communities. Today, your donation helps provide emergency assistance to the families who need it most.

people have been displaced

As rescue operations continue, tens of thousands of people remain missing.

More than 300 aftershocks have been recorded since the earthquakes, making rescue efforts even more challenging.

Behind these figures are thousands of lives that have been shattered. Many families have lost their homes or can no longer return to them. Others have found temporary shelter in public buildings, emergency accommodation or parish facilities that have opened their doors. Humanitarian needs continue to grow.

A disaster hitting an already vulnerable country

Even before the earthquakes, nearly 7.9 million people were already in need of humanitarian assistance. For a large part of the population, access to healthcare, safe drinking water and adequate food was already extremely limited. Today, this disaster is making an already critical humanitarian situation even worse.

A response driven by local communities

Our colleagues at Caritas Venezuela began responding within hours of the earthquakes.

Thanks to their presence across the country, they are assessing the damage, identifying the most urgent needs and coordinating the response with the wider Caritas network.

With 35 diocesan offices and more than 30,000 volunteers, Caritas Venezuela can reach even the hardest-hit communities quickly.

To respond to the scale of the disaster, Caritas Venezuela has launched its 24×24 Plan. Teams alternate between days dedicated to receiving, sorting and preparing relief supplies and days entirely focused on distributing them to affected communities.

This approach ensures that aid reaches people quickly, efficiently and transparently, while constantly adapting to evolving needs.

Alongside material assistance, Caritas teams continue to provide psychosocial support to the most vulnerable people.
