In Gaza, thousands of civilians died under the bombs, while hunger and disease spread through an enclave with no way out. In the West Bank, violence against Palestinians increased, along with the economic crisis. Israeli airstrikes also hit Lebanon. In Ukraine, the war entered its third year. And in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, armed conflict displaced 500,000 people and left 2.1 million in urgent need.
Meanwhile, in Europe, including here in Belgium, the foundations of solidarity are under growing pressure. The federal government announced cuts to international cooperation budgets. At the same time, support for migrants is being scaled back significantly. The consequences are tangible: thousands of people are waiting for shelter, and access to protection is becoming increasingly difficult.
For Caritas International, this strikes at the very heart of our mission. Because just as global needs are rising, the means to help are being reduced.
That’s why, in this anniversary year, Caritas chose to reflect and renew.
Under the leadership of our new director, Luc Van Haute, we have reshaped our strategy — with sharper focus, stronger impact, and a renewed commitment to be present wherever the needs are greatest.
This annual report shows how Caritas International provided aid throughout 2024 in conflict zones such as the Great Lakes region, the Middle East, and Ukraine — as well as here in Belgium, where people arrived after leaving everything behind in search of safety.
With your support, we continue to build peace, justice, and humanity.
